Plan Description

Cube House. Designed to suit a range of settings including narrow deep lots in older suburbs. In architect Greg La Vardera's words: "It trades off bedroom size for a greater amount of living space, and a higher number of bedrooms. It's perfect for large families or work at home parents that need more than one home office." See how the living room occupies about a third of the ground floor. French doors or a folding wall connect it easily to the side yard. Or rotate the plan, depending on lot characteristics and the desired sun orientation, and put the living room at the rear where it can open to the backyard. Consider adding a paved terrace or deck off the living room and perhaps a trellis for shade. The living room is one and a half stories high, for a greater sense of spaciousness without adding square footage. The top floor frames views from a private roof terrace, a sort of backyard-in-the-sky.

Meet the Designer - Greg La Vardera

null -
“Our designs are flexible and allow different people to use them in different ways. It is possible to build our designs with conventional methods familiar to any builder, or to introduce unique materials.”

Gregory La Vardera graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. He started his own practice in 1994 specializing in light residential and commercial work and has recently branched into contemporary stock house plans. Extensive experience in common building techniques helped shape his designs, which suit a variety of sites, celebrate indoor-outdoor living, and use simple forms and materials in expressive ways. One plan even draws inspiration from the mid-century modern houses built by the California community developer Joseph Eichler. The plans include one and two story designs.

NEWS: Check out the October 2008 Met Home magazine for a fine article by author/editor Karrie Jacobs on how architect Greg La Vardera is making modern house plans affordable, and on his exclusive relationship with The article points out that Greg's “Plat House” is his best seller.
