Northwest House Plans

Designed by architects from the Washington and Oregon, Northwest house plans are usually simple in design, devoid of excessive exterior details and constructed mostly of wood. The roof of a Northwest home design is usually medium to low-pitched with deep overhangs but large windows bringing the maximum daylight into the interior. The Northwest home style favors natural materials to blend into the environment and work with the rainy Northwestern climate. Important early practitioners of a Northwest brand of mid-century modernism were Pietro Belluschi and John Yeon in Portland, and Paul Thiry and Roland Terry in Seattle.

Useful information:
Like 20th century residential architecture of the San Francisco Bay Region, Northwest style houses emphasize a regional modern approach, often using open plans and easy indoor-outdoor relationships within a woodsy vocabulary. Architectural histories include Shaping Seattle Architecture: A Historical Guide to the Architects, edited by Geoffrey Ochsner (University of Washington Press, 2003); and Space, Style, and Structure: Building in Northwest America, edited by Thomas Vaughn (Oregon Historical Society, 1974). A famous Northwest regional modern example is the house built by lumber magnate Aubrey Watzek in Portland in 1937, designed by John Yeon, and now manager by the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts.
