What floor plan features are homebuyers asking for most often right now?
The home continues to be an oasis for living well. Fitness at home is a growing trend and home gyms continue to fulfill homeowners' needs to use their home to support their lifestyle, but the trend has expanded to include a focus on overall wellness.
Flex rooms, lofts, and spa-like bathrooms can transform into wellness-focused spaces with thoughtful design choices.
Popular wellness ideas for the home include meditation and mindfulness spaces, spa-inspired bathroom retreats with large walk-in showers and free-standing tubs, fitness and stretching areas, at-home saunas, and indoor/outdoor living spaces that extend the living area seamlessly from indoor to outdoor, including outdoor kitchens and entertainment features.
Have buyer preferences shifted in recent years when it comes to open-concept layouts versus more defined rooms?
Open-concept floor plans continue to remain popular, while private flex spaces to accommodate lifestyle and wellness needs are on the rise.
Now and in the future, we also anticipate the continued desire for multigenerational living spaces within the home to be important.
As families prioritize their lifestyle to include parents or other family members living within the same dwelling, designing space to accommodate this remains important.
What features do you think have the most long-term staying power, even as design trends change?
In the kitchen, panel-ready appliances, such as refrigeration, allow the space to merge beautifully with a "furniture look" that seamlessly blends for a sophisticated and polished design.
Enlarged pantries and prep kitchens provide functionality and, importantly, storage alternatives, which remain a high priority.
Smaller, Smarter Layouts
Bigger isn’t always better. A well-designed layout makes the most of every square foot, and recent sales data backs that up. In 2025, 50% of house plans sold measured between 1,000 and 1,999 square feet.
Compact plans minimize wasted space while keeping shared living areas open and connected. Look for clever rooms like a home office, a hobby room, or a guest suite.
