Plan Description

Inspired by traditional small cottages found in the UK and France, this cottage provides a Great Room, Master Bedroom, and a home office on one floor. The 1st floor Great Room and Master Bedroom have large south facing windows and vaulted ceilings to make the space feel larger. The upper floor is a small retreat and can be used as a Guest Room, Craft Room, Exercise Room, reading nook, etc.… Although this design is for a gently sloped site, it can be adapted to a flat site by raising the garage floor. The following features provide an environmentally sustainable and healthy structure as well as affordability to maintain as the building ages: • The 1st floor has a concrete floor to help retain heat and the south facing windows have overhangs to prevent overheating in the summer. • The building shell is super insulated using traditional 2x6 framing wall with external rigid insulation.  • The added insulation and smaller building size mean that the house will use less energy to heat and cool. • Durable, low-maintenance fiber cement and stucco for the exterior finishes reduce long-term maintenance costs. • Traditional framing methods make it easy to find local labor, while using “Advanced Framing” reduces the overall amount of lumber, offsetting the added costs of exterior insulation. • Oriented around a southern exposure for optimum solar access.  • The roofline accommodates sufficient space for solar panels. Heavier insulation and good daylight exposure can also reduce the quantities of solar panels required.  • Interior materials are specified to be low or no VOC to provide healthy indoor air quality.

Yamaguchi Martin Architects was established in 2011 and is located in Denver, Colorado, by two founding partners who worked for architectural firms for 14 years. Both partners are architecture graduates of the University of Oregon. We have licenses in Colorado and New York and have completed projects in Colorado, Michigan, and California. We believe that a house can be affordable to build and maintain if the design considers living with "just what we need”. Keeping rooms simple and compact and eliminating wasteful circulation leads to right-sizing of the house.
