New Virtual Architecture Studio Makes Architecture Accessible and Affordable

Houseplans announces launch of Internet-based Houseplans Studio; Leverages database of nearly 50K ready-made plans from top architects and designers

Novato, CA  (June 4, 2013) – Delivering on its promise to put top-quality architectural resources in reach of anyone building or remodeling a home, Houseplans today announced the launch of Houseplans Studio, a first-of-its-kind virtual architecture collective that makes custom home design efficient and cost-effective for all current and prospective homeowners.

The hallmark of Houseplans Studio’s parent company, Houseplans LLC, is its searchable online database of nearly 40,000 home blueprints, ranging from Craftsman bungalows to cutting-edge modern showpieces.

By starting with Houseplans's ready-made plans as the foundation of each client’s home design, Houseplans' architecture studio reduces the time – and thus expense – of designing new residences from scratch.

Plans include exclusive designs by Sarah Susanka (author of The Not So Big House series of books), Marianne Cusato (designer of New Orleans’ Katrina Cottages), and Nir Pearlson (winner of the 2013 Fine Homebuilding Small House of the Year).

“Houseplans Studio is a reimagining of a classic residential architectural firm, one that addresses the needs of both cost-conscious homeowners who want beautifully-designed homes, and architects who want to connect with new clientele,” said Nicholas Lee, AIA, chief of design of Houseplans and Houseplans Studio. “By using ‘seed plans’ to fuel the design process, and by working ‘virtually’ via the Internet, we make it affordable for more people to engage personally with architects, and derive the benefits of having a home designed just for them.”

Houseplans Studio assembles a team for each client typically including the original plan designer or designers, along with engineers and architects from its virtual global network. Together, the team develops a final design that meets the client’s needs and those of the building site, and counsels the client throughout the home’s construction

Houseplans Studio is the latest offering from Houseplans, which has quietly grown into the premier online source for quality home designs since its 2004 launch. Tens of thousands of homes have been built from plans purchased on the site.

The site has also developed into a platform for influential architects and designers to market themselves to customers they could not reach otherwise. Unique among its competitive set, Houseplans boasts a growing architectural and design roster of dozens of high-profile individuals, teams and firms that offer their plans exclusively to Houseplans's users.

“Houseplans is fueling a new era in residential architecture,” said Jamie Roche, who joined the company as its president and CEO in 2012.  “We help architects find new custom home clients and we help a huge new market gain access to real architecture.”

Houseplans also sells rare historical blueprints from prominent 20th century California architects including William Turnbull, Joseph Eichler, and William Wurster & Theodore Bernardi, part of the exclusive plans collection assembled by Houseplans editor Daniel Gregory, Ph. D., former senior home editor of Sunset magazine and author of Cliff May and the Modern Ranch House.

“Houseplans and Houseplans Studio connect people with high-end architectural resources that, until recently, would have been available only to a small number of people with elite access and deep pockets,” said Roche. “We firmly believe that everyone building or remodeling a home should have great, personalized design available regardless of financial resources, location or prior architectural know-how.”
