Plan Description

The pleasantly compact Guest House with its spacious Great Room can also be a primary residence. At 971 SF, it is right sized for a family of one to three members. The simple layout and design keeps all the action close to the center. The large south glass wall allows for a seamless connection between indoors and out making the house seem much larger than it is. Some features that promote an environmentally sustainable and healthy structure and is affordable to maintain as the building ages are as follows: • The building shell is super insulated and uses a traditional 2x6 framing wall with 4” of external rigid insulation. • The super insulation together with a smaller building size means that the house will use less energy to heat and cool it. • Durable, low-maintenance exterior grade wood and metal for the exterior finishes reduce long term maintenance costs. • Traditional framing methods make it easy to find local labor, while using “Advanced Framing” reduces the overall amount of lumber, compensating for the added costs in other materials like exterior insulation. • Oriented around a southern exposure to get the optimum solar access. • The roofline accommodates sufficient space for solar panels (especially on the garage). Heavier insulation and good daylight exposure can also reduce the quantity of solar panels required. • Interior materials are specified to be low or no VOC to provide a healthy indoor air quality.

Yamaguchi Martin Architects was established in 2011 and is located in Denver, Colorado, by two founding partners who worked for architectural firms for 14 years. Both partners are architecture graduates of the University of Oregon. We have licenses in Colorado and New York and have completed projects in Colorado, Michigan, and California.

We believe that a house can be affordable to build and maintain if the design considers living with "just what we need”. Keeping rooms simple and compact and eliminating wasteful circulation leads to right-sizing of the house. At the same time, each house design has a unique space or quality making the house special and enjoyable. Keeping with that intent, our Construction Documents specify permanent materials which are environmentally sustainable and easy to maintain for years. They also include building techniques which reduce waste of materials and time. Additionally, a super-insulated building envelope with ample south exposure and proper shading allows the house to reduce its reliance on utilities to maintain itself.

Our house design principle is; Simple Living with “just what we need,” using sustainable techniques to achieve healthy living, while keeping construction, operation, and maintenance costs to a minimum.
