Plan Description

The forms of Yolo Cabin are inspired by farmstead water towers and lean-to sheds that dot agricultural landscapes. The top of the tower is a viewing terrace or loggia, which allows 360-degree views to the horizon. The main kitchen/living room is housed in the lean-to section, and is also elevated off the ground to enhance the view, as well as for air circulation during hot summers. The bedroom is at the base of the tower. The cabin is supported on two large glulam beams, which allows it to be moved in the future if desired.

Meet the Designer - Butler Armsden Architects

Butler Armsden Architects - Houseplans.com
“The key to effectively designing small, rural cabins and houses is to keep them simple, enabling them to absorb the environment in which they are situated. When the designs stray into complexity, the essence of a home surrounded by nature is lost. Embracing simplicity throughout the process is essential, and one of the biggest challenges of creating a house that is truly at home in it’s setting.”

Lewis W. Butler and his wife Catherine Armsden founded Butler Armsden Architects in 1985, a year after graduating from Harvard Graduate School of Design. Throughout the years, Butler Armsden has become a preeminent fixture in the California architecture scene, known for meticulously designed houses in San Francisco and the Bay Area as well as relaxed cabins and vacation homes in the surrounding Yolo, Shasta, Sonoma, and Napa counties, the Peninsula, and other areas. The detailed design of large living and sitting rooms, libraries, conservatories, and other entertainment spaces can be found in most Butler Armsden projects. Lewis and the firm are dedicated to a high level of design and detail, which is evident in all of Butler Armsden’s projects, regardless of size and complexity. Butler’s clients have included executives of the major technology, financial, and law firms as well as leaders in the arts and philanthropic communities of San Francisco and beyond.
