The Santa Cruz is one of six gorgeous little 400-square-foot houses in the California Collection created by The Homestead Partners. Each house has a full kitchen and bathroom, private bedroom with space for at least a queen-size bed, living/dining/kitchen that opens to an outdoor dining patio or terrace, and plenty of storage. Big enough to have a friend over. Just make sure you're in love with them first. Dress a Spanish provincial governor in Jay Gatsby’s suit and you’ve got a very different protagonist. Same with the California ranch house, a first cousin of Spanish Colonial developed by architect William Wurster in the 1920s from ranch houses clothed in vertical wood siding instead of adobe. Ours is smaller but still true to the spirit of Wurster’s “living porches” designs that so successfully blur the distinction between inside and out. Interior Features 399 square feet Open living/dining room and full kitchen, with sliding doors opening to raised side patio, and entry door opening to raised front porch Cathedral ceilings with exposed rafters throughout Full bathroom Space for compact washer/dryer Walk-in closet Bedroom sized for a queen bed, with built-in storage, and sliding door opening to side porch Exterior Features 445 square feet Raised open-air porch at entry Covered raised side porch, with built-in grill Total Footprint 844 square feet

FAQs

Are designs on Houseplans ready to submit to my building department for permitting?

It depends on where you're building. Our plans contain enough information for a professional builder to construct your home, but your local government may require additional information before permitting. We strongly advise that you talk with your builder before you get started. If you are building for yourself, we recommend visiting your local building department to start your diligence. Read more here.

Can I make changes to a plan?

Absolutely! Our modification service allows you to customize almost anything - whether it's adding an extra garage bay, adjusting square footage, changing the roof pitch, or more, the plan modification service is a great value and can be completed quickly. Additionally, if you purchase an electronic plan set (PDF or CAD), you may have the option to make changes locally. CAD files offer the most flexibility for custom edits. Just let us know what you're thinking, and we’ll provide an estimate and timeframe to get started. Learn more here.
